Southampton's relegation is almost certain now. But if the Saints still don't improve, they might end up recording the worst Premier League run ever.

You would agree the Premier League is the toughest challenge for any player or manager. The reason is that here the clubs are known to compete for glory neck-to-neck with other sides.

Yet, don't ever think that the competition is only fierce at the top. Even in a relegation-stricken scenario, the vulnerable clubs always aim to maintain their first-division status. Such is the quality here.

But, the current season is special in itself. Know why? This time, 19 clubs are in an intense battle for glory, while Southampton is in a competition with the league's history for a special record.

By now, you would have guessed it. Yes, the unwanted lowest points record ever.

Though it sounds harsh, Southampton's true competitors feel to be the 2007/08 season's Derby County side.

Not convinced completely? Well, the following stat would suffice for it.

Southampton en route to mark the worst Top Flight run ever

Recently, Sky Sports Premier League pointed out the similarity between Derby County's season and the Saints, saying: "Southampton find themselves on the same number of points as Derby County did after 27 games during 2007/08, when the Rams finished on a record-low points total of 11."

If that wasn't enough shameful, the Saints have had a poorer goal difference so far than the Rams.

Know what's further distressing? The Saints now have a real possibility to finish even lower than 11 points. Considering the schedule ahead, there is not a single game that feels winnable given their form.

Just imagining this should send chills down the spine of the Saints fans. If it happens, it would be the biggest setback for the club's history.

All in all, it's a critical situation for Southampton. Already, hit multiple lows previously, the Saints must improve so as not to deteriorate their Top Flight status further.
