Southampton have reportedly entered discussions with Benfica for striker Gonçalo Ramos as their hunt for a new forward intensifies.
That is according to the Athletic, who report that discussions took place between the clubs in Denmark last week ahead of Benfica’s Champions League win over Midtjylland.
The fee currently being discussed is £25m, which would make Ramos the club’s record signing – beating the £20m they spent on Danny Ings in 2019.
Ramos, 21, has started this season in red hot form with five goals and three assists in five games so far to fill the void left by Darwin Núñez’s departure to Liverpool.
A Portuguese underage international, he also has 14 goals in 18 caps for his country’s U21 side.
The Saints have been in the market for a new striker throughout this summer, with Liam Delap, Joshua Zirkzee and Armando Broja among the names prominently linked.
