Southampton have drawn up a ‘list’ of potential centre-forward signings as Nathan Jones looks to add some additional firepower to his side, transfer insider Dean Jones has informed GIVEMESPORT.

The Saints have already been active this month in the window, sealing deals for Carlos Alcaraz, Mislav Orsic and James Bree.

Southampton latest transfer news

Lately, The Daily Mail had reported that Southampton’s pursuit of Villarreal forward Nicolas Jackson was in jeopardy with Bournemouth now being the favourites to secure his signature, although that move could be in doubt after the player failed a medical.

The Saints had previously been in ‘advanced’ talks with the 21-year-old attacker; however, he now looks poised to complete a move to the Vitality Stadium for a fee in the region of £20.3 million.

Earlier this month, talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook revealed when talking to GIVEMESPORT that Southampton had also previously been interested in seasoned Premier League marksman Danny Ings before he completed a £15 million transfer to West Ham United last week.

The 30-year-old is a former Southampton player, spending two years on the South Coast, where he netted 46 times in 100 appearances, as per Transfermarkt.

What has Dean Jones said about Southampton’s striker search?

Transfer insider Jones thinks that Southampton will ‘sign somebody’ in January to bolster their attack, with the Saints having already made a list of potential incomings.

Jones told GMS: “Manchester United signing Wout Weghorst, that’s really the sort of player that Southampton might have been looking at in a window like this if it was potentially available.

“You see other clubs throwing pretty big money players that seem reasonably risky. I know the list has been drawn up for Saints. They’ve been working through it to identify the best candidate, and I’m pretty sure that they will sign somebody.”

Do Southampton need to sign another centre-forward?

Given their position at the foot of the Premier League table, Southampton could definitely benefit from having another centre-forward in the building to aid their fight against relegation.

Che Adams is their top-scorer in all competitions with eight goals; however, their other attackers, Sekou Mara and Adam Armstrong, have just three efforts between them, as per Transfermarkt.

James Ward-Prowse has netted seven times from midfield, though the majority of his goals have been from set-piece situations. Unsurprisingly, only Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest have put the ball away on fewer occasions than the Saints this campaign in the English top-flight.

Moving forward, bringing in another quality striker would go a long way to helping Southampton rediscover their goalscoring form between now and the end of this term.
