Southampton‘s biggest worry this season is their lack of goals, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

Saints scored just 43 times in the Premier League last term and kicked off the 2022-2023 campaign with a 4-1 defeat at Tottenham last weekend.

What happened against Tottenham?

Despite James Ward-Prowse’s early opener putting Southampton into a shock lead in north London, four goals without reply meant Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side slipped to a 4-1 defeat on the opening day.

Ryan Sessegnon replied 10 minutes after Ward-Prowse’s measured finish before Eric Dier completed the turnaround just past the half hour mark.

Despite a tame first-half showing, Saints were still well in the contest heading into the interval, although their hopes of a second Tottenham Hotspur Stadium victory of 2022 were ended by a Mohammed Salisu own goal and Dejan Kulusevski strike.

Southampton will be hoping to get their season up and running against Leeds this afternoon, but their goalscoring woes is a major concern for Barclay.

What did Barclay say about Southampton?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Adam Armstrong is a player we’ve talked about before, obviously he struggled last season to score goals, hopefully he will improve this season, but I don’t think you can hang your hat on it.

“Che Adams brings a lot more to that role than Armstrong does, when you discount goals, but in a formation like that you need your striker to be your main source of goals, so if [Sekou] Mara can come in and add that cutting edge that would be most welcome for Southampton, because that’s my biggest worry for them is their lack of goals.”

Who could start up front against Leeds?

Southampton’s goalscoring problems are simply down to their lack of quality up front.

Hasenhuttl currently has three strikers at his disposal, although two of those are Armstrong, who’s scored just two Premier League goals since his big-money move from Blackburn last summer and Mara, who has never kicked a ball in England’s top-flight.

That leaves Che Adams, who is currently playing the role of senior striker at St Mary’s, although he was left on the bench against Tottenham and has been strongly linked with a move.

But talkSPORT have since claimed that Southampton aren’t looking to sell the ex-Birmingham star, which might allow him to make his first outing of the season against Leeds.
