FLW's Saints expert weighs up Brugge bid for inconsistent winger
This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk‘ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
As interest in Samuel Edozie intensifies from Belgium, Southampton find themselves in a familiar but uncomfortable position - fielding enquiries for yet another of their academy products while trying to rebuild in the Championship.
After a mixed loan spell at Anderlecht that saw the 21 year old Saints winger manage three goals and assists assists in 32 Belgian Pro League appearances, Edozie has caught the eye of Club Brugge.
The Champions League regulars are reportedly keen on a permanent deal as they look to replace the Sunderland-bound Chemsdine Talbi.
Following Edozie’s links away from St Mary's, Football League World spoke with resident Saints expert Martin Sanders for his take on whether the winger should leave the club this summer.
“I thought he had a future to be honest, sent him out on loan last season to gain some experience, though it was in the Belgian first division,” Sanders told FLW.
“Apparently he was a mixed bag there, did okay. Never massively impressed me during his time at Southampton, I'll be totally honest with you.
“I would love to see an upgrade on him, a better player coming in. So if you can let him go, bring in someone better.”
“He wasn't on my list of players that I wanted to see leave, but I do want to see better than him - bearing in mind that he was the replacement for Nathan Tella, and Nathan Tella is far the better player.
“We also let Sam Amo-Ameyaw, I think Ameyaw is a better player than Edozie personally.
“I think his agent's trying to get him a move, to be honest. There's a lot of noise around him, usually for a reason, looking to get an exit, I would think.
“Hopefully we've got some players lined up to come in if we do let him go because we're a little bit lightweight in the wider positions.”
For now, there's no indication that a move is imminent - but there's little doubt Edozie's name will remain in circulation as Will Still continues his Championship rebuild.
His proven adaptability to Belgian football makes him a logical target for Club Brugge seeking value and familiarity in the forward market.
Whether Southampton decide to entertain offers this summer - or hold firm in the hope of building around homegrown talent - may ultimately depend on the scale of the bids and their recruitment strategy.
With several years left on his deal and no reported release clause, the Saints remain in a strong negotiating position - but Edozie's growing profile in Belgium suggests it's only a matter of time before serious decisions have to be made.
