Southampton are eyeing Liam Rosenior’s Ligue 1 counterpart Will Still for the head coach role, a tactician who may be a more affordable option than European football-chasing Rosenior.
With each passing day, the Saints’ managerial hunt seems to shape shift. One moment, it’s Danny Rohl dominating the rumour mill. The next, it's Liam Rosenior or Steven Gerrard or some other name enters the frame.
But what stands out this time is Southampton’s intent to minimise risk, both on the pitch and on the books.
That’s likely why, even after hearing a supposed deadline for their long-desired target Rohl, we’ve yet to see any decisive move from the club.
Chances are, Southampton’s silence stems from financial caution, a lesson well learned after the Russell Martin fumble. Suffered once, the Saints may not be willing to haste again.
And that’s exactly where the latest link fits in. Now, the club are circling back to a familiar profile, a Liam Rosenior-esque boss in RC Lens coach Will Still.
Well, apart from sharing similar credentials of an English manager in charge of a Ligue 1 club, Still has replicated Rosenior's success at Lens this season. But that's not his profile highlight, still.
Instead, it's the manager's current contract that might allow Southampton to swoop away him for a lower fee as compared to compatriot Rosenior or even Danny Rohl. Now, that's sure to give the Saints fans an immediate interest in Will's transfer links.
As per talkSPORT, Will Still appears to be the latest addition to Southampton's shortlist for the managerial role. And while his name might be fresher than others, it could end up being the smartest shout of the summer.
Now imagine, while Saints counterparts Leicester scout Championship coaches, Southampton could directly snatch an edge if they successfully complete a move for Ligue 1 boss Will Still.
But, it's been recent history, that Southampton have fumbled in taking even the easiest of wiser decisions. Hopefully, that not happens with Still's pursuit.
