Southampton manager Marieanne Spacey-Cale says that her side are excited to test themselves against the ‘deserved’ Barclays Women’s Championship leaders London City Lionesses at Princes Park this afternoon.

Neither side have lost a league fixture since the opening day of the season. London City Lionesses hold a two-point advantage over Southampton courtesy of The Pride winning one more game.

When speaking in a pre-match interview with FAWSL Full-Time, Southampton boss Spacey-Cale said that London City Lionesses are the deserved league leaders.

“They’re deservedly top of the table, they’re a very organised team, well-coached by Mel (Phillips) and they really seem to know their roles and responsibilities,” Spacey-Cale said.

“They’re the deserved league leaders at this moment and we are going into it with the mindset of ‘this is going to be another challenging game’. This is why we wanted to be in the Championship and this is what we have been preparing for week in, week out. It is about how do we continue our momentum and our performances without having the pressure of thinking about what if we do this or that? You can only perform as you can perform, the momentum that we have is from a strong run but like anything, you only get those strong runs because of the hard work and belief and from the support that the players and staff give each other.

“It is an exciting game, it is a challenging game, we prepare for it as we always do and look forward to the challenge.”

London City Lionesses are the top scorers in the Barclays Women’s Championship and Spacey-Cale is looking forward to the defensive challenges that her side will face this afternoon.

She said “Every game gives you a challenge defensively for different reasons and London City will give us a different challenge to what we have had before.

“We always want to be hard to beat. We pride ourselves on the clean sheets that we have had so far this season and we continue to strive for those. They’ve got some in-form strikers, some in-form goalscoring midfielders so it is going to be a challenge but we trust our process and the squad are hungry to continue the success and the momentum that we have got.

“They’ll be just as excited by the challenge of breaking our defence down so it’ll be an interesting encounter.”

Southampton’s Barclays Women’s Championship fixture at London City Lionesses kicks-off at 2pm.
