Southampton are “definitely” interested in signing young Manchester City goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

Two of Saints’ senior stoppers are out of contract this summer, which means that Ralph Hasenhuttl is hoping to improve his goalkeeping department when the window reopens for business.

What is Southampton’s current goalkeeping situation?

Hasenhuttl currently has three experienced keepers at his disposal in Alex McCarthy, Fraser Forster, and Willy Caballero.

But only McCarthy’s future has been resolved, which could make for an uncertain summer.

The ex-QPR and Crystal Palace goalkeeper, who was the club’s number one prior to his injury before Christmas, recently committed his future to Southampton, although the club didn’t officially announce his extension.

What year was the club founded?

His absence has allowed 34-year-old Forster to become first choice, but the Telegraph believe that despite his impressive form, which lead to an England recall, he’s expected to move on in the summer, along with Caballero, who was only signed for cover.

Should Forster and Caballero part ways, Saints will need to sign someone to provide competition for McCarthy, and talkSPORT believe that 20-year-old Bazunu, who’s on loan from Manchester City but off the back of a fine season in League One with Portsmouth, is on their radar.

What did Crook say about Bazunu?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “They’re definitely in for Bazunu because Fraser Forster is unlikely to stay, he’s one of the top earners and he’s 34.

“The plan was always to keep either McCarthy or Forster and bring in a young goalkeeper like Bazunu. There’s also a target in Spain, so they’re scouring the market for an up and coming goalkeeper.”

How has Bazunu performed this season?

While Portsmouth weren’t able to sneak into the top-six, it was another productive loan spell for the City youngster.

Overall, he started 44 third-tier fixtures and kept an impressive 16 clean sheets, which saw him named Players’ Player of the Season and Supporters’ Player of the Season.

As a result, Pompey manager Danny Cowley said that he expects Bazunu to go all the way to the top, which he would appear well on his way to doing having established himself as Republic of Ireland’s number one over the last 12 months, starting each of their last seven competitive fixtures.

And Bazunu has already made his mark in the international stage by saving a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty in Ireland’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal back in September.
