Southampton defender Yan Valery is keeping tight-lipped about his future, with rumours linking him with a return to his native France.

The 23-year-old made just three starts in the Premier League last season, which stands in stark comparison to his first season on the South coast where he was handed 20 appearances in the starting lineup.

“I have one year left on my contract, we’ll see what happens,” said Valery to the Daily Echo. “I’m still at Southampton and we’ll see what happens this summer.”

Valery spent two years in the Rennes youth sector, before joining Southampton as a 16-year-old.

“I’m never going to spit on Ligue 1, I’m French, of course. Ligue 1, if it’s a top club – there are a lot of them – even my training club Rennes are coming out of a superb season, and you also see clubs like Strasbourg or Lens, they are playing very well.

“We know after the big clubs with Nice, Lyon, there are a lot of very good clubs and I wouldn’t mind one day returning to France and playing there, that’s for sure.”

“We know Marseille are a very big club in France so no one will ever spit on them.”

Valery suffered from a bout of glandular fever that kept him out of the side during the 2019/20 campaign, but now fully recovered, it seems like his future is still to be decided.
