Highlights

  • Southampton are considering a move for Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski to strengthen their attacking options.
  • The club's Head of Recruitment, Darren Mowbray, is targeting Miovski and wants Southampton to be competitive if Aberdeen decides to sell.
  • Miovski has been in impressive form for Aberdeen and has a good scoring record in the SPFL and in European competitions.

Southampton are keeping tabs on Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski, as Russell Martin looks to strengthen his squad in January to help their promotion push.

After starting their first season in the second tier in eleven years rather inconsistently, Martin's side are by far and away the division's form side at present, as they remain unbeaten since September 23rd and have closed the gap on Ipswich Town to just five points.

Despite their strong form, Saints' attacking department has at times raised eyebrows for those on the outside, as below Adam Armstrong, none of the club's recognised strikers have scored on more than five occasions, albeit Che Adams did find the net in the 5-0 victory over the Swans on Boxing Day.

Whilst on paper, the attacking options of Armstrong, Adams and Ross Stewart would be a trio many Championship managers would be envious of, Martin himself faces a dilemma in January as a result of varying circumstances.

Adams has been linked with a move to Premier League strugglers Burnley, whilst Martin confirmed that Stewart is unlikely to feature again this season after making just three appearances amid long-term injury problems.

This has led to links with former striker Danny Ings, as well as the club's Head of Recruitment Darren Mowbray wanting to utilise his links with Aberdeen to good effect, as the Daily Record report that Miovski is a potential January target.

Mowbray is aware of the growing interest and wants Southampton to be firmly in the fight for Miovski should Aberdeen sell. He has continually pushed him to Saints manager Russell Martin. Martin has to decide whether or not to bring in another striker for Southampton’s Premier League promotion push."

Bojan Miovski's time at Aberdeen FC

The North Macedonian international was brought to Pittodrie back in the summer of 2022, as he and Ylber Ramadani made the double switch from MTK Budapest for a combined fee of just £625,000 as per the Press and Journal.

Since his move to Scotland, Miovski has been one of the SPFL's most clinical strikers, and has formed a lethal partnership with Duk, as he and the Cape Verdean both struck on 16 occasions in the league last term.

Miovski has so far found the net eight times in the league this season, as well as four goals on the European front and two goals in the Dons' run to the Scottish League Cup final, where they were defeated by Rangers at Hampden Park.

The forward also has 17 caps for his country, scoring on two occasions as well as featuring against England in the recent European Qualifiers.

"He's not allowed to go..." - Barry Robson reveals Aberdeen stance

Current Aberdeen boss and former Middlesbrough midfielder Barry Robson made his stance on recent interest clear as Celtic have also expressed their desire to sign the 24-year-old.

“We’ll just have to say to Dave (Chairman, Dave Cormack) he’s not allowed to go. There is a model at this club and we’ve signed a lot of good players." Robson stated via the Press and Journal.

“We’re a good team when we’re at it and with Bojan and others who perform well in big European games, people look at that. We want him to stay as long as he can and hopefully he’ll be here for a good bit longer.”

Given his form and relationship with the Dons' fellow attackers, it's no surprise that this is a key factor in Robson's stance, as he continued further.

“There’s more to come from the lad. We could see when he came in there were things to improve on but he’s built a good relationship with Duk and Ester Sokler.

“He’s doing really well. He’s always enjoyed the way we want to play on the transition. We want to find him all the time and it suits him.”

Is this a feasible option for Southampton?

Given Mowbray's knowledge of the Scottish game, it's no surprise that a rumour like this has come to fruition, and Miovski would definitely be a shrewd addition.

FootballScotland report that any deal would have to surpass the SPFL's internal transfer record given the interest from the Glasgow giants, which is currently Scott Brown's move to Celtic from Hibernian at £4.4m.

Southampton may face a battle on their hands, but if a deal was to materialise, the forward could be pivotal in the promotion race, which the Saints are well and truly in the midst of now, given their current form, which at times has still gone under the radar.
