Liverpool survived a late push from Southampton during a 2-1 win at St Mary's Stadium as they secured their spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Southampton had found themselves five goals behind at half-time during the weekend defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and the Saints could only limit Liverpool to two in the same timeframe.
Darwin Nunez took advantage of uncertainty in the Southampton backline to slot Liverpool in front after 24 minutes, with Harvey Elliott's effort doubling their lead eight minutes later following a slick move.
Liverpool appeared to be cruising towards the final four of the competition but Cameron Archer's excellent effort gave them food for thought. The Saints striker fired emphatically beyond Caoimhin Kelleher to offer his side a lifeline.
Southampton pushed frantically for an equaliser and had some promising moments in the closing stages, with Jarell Quansah fortunate not to be sent off in second-half stoppage time as Liverpool narrowly held on to their lead.
