Singh extends Limassol stay
South African star pens new deal in Europe
South African winger Luther Singh has put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at AEL Limassol until May 2027, having joined the club on a two-year deal after a brief stint with Serbian club Cukaricki.
Prior to securing a move to Cyprus on a free transfer, Singh was in the wilderness, a shadow of his former self. However, things changed when he found his feet at his new club, catching the eye with impressive displays.
The 27-year-old was one of the top assist providers in Cyprus last season, chipping in with a total of 14 assists, while scoring three goals in 31 appearances across all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign.
Singh was on the radar of several clubs that were interested in luring him back to Africa before he signed for the six-time Cypriot champions. However, the Stars of Africa academy product opted to enhance his career abroad.
Egyptian giants Zamalek SC were said to have registered concrete interest in acquiring the player’s services, including another Egyptian side in Ismaily SC. Moreover, an unnamed team from Soweto was also keen to sign the tricky forward.
While he has rediscovered his form with Limassol, Singh is yet to land on the radar of national team coach Hugo Broos, with the 2025 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) and 2026 FIFA World Cup, provided Bafana Bafana qualify, on the horizon.
The Soweto-born attacker has 17 caps under his belt, with three goals to his name, having made his senior national team debut in 2017 under then-coach Owen Da Gama, who has since taken up a new project at the newly formed Black Lions in the Botswana FNB Premiership.
It remains to be seen whether Singh can catch the eye of the 72-year-old mentor ahead of the major tournaments. The Limassol forward’s last appearance for the South African national team dates back to September 2021 against Zimbabwe in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
