A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Leipzig are preparing to lose the goalscoring midfielder and are assessing potential replacements in the summer window.

Sabitzer enters the final 12 months of his contract in the summer and the Bundesliga club have failed to tie him to an extended deal.

Leipzig have already lost a key member of their team for next season with defender Dayot Upamecano joining Bayern Munich in the summer after they activated his £38.5million release clause.

Sabitzer is also likely to leave, and one potential destination is Tottenham.

The Londoners enquired about the Austrian via intermediaries in the January window as they lay the foundations for a summer swoop.

The source explained the player has been closely watched by recruitment chief Steve Hitchen and his team this season and has earned rave reviews with his performances.

Sabitzer is a regular goalscorer and creator from central midfield, a position Spurs are looking to strengthen.

He has scored six goals in all competitions and registered half a dozen assists as well from his 27 matches this season.

Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche has admitted his club could lose the midfielder.

“[Sabitzer] has made a great development. It goes without saying that other clubs also notice this,” he said.
