The Chelsea mega-money pursuit of Erling Haaland “holds the key” to the entire English summer transfer market, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
This site revealed last week the big spending Londoners are planning to explore a deal for the Borussia Dortmund goal machine.
Part-exchange and player-plus-cash options will be discussed to get a deal over the finish line, including one involving Timo Werner.
A source with knowledge of Chelsea’s recruitment plans has told Football Insider the club will “go big” for Haaland this summer and the potential deal “holds the key” to the entire Premier League market and possibly the European one as well.
With clubs suffering financially after a season with no fans, prices are set to tumble across the board as few teams will have the resources for blockbuster deals.
The market is likely to need one huge transfer to create a domino effect and that could well be Haaland to Chelsea.
Should a deal be agreed, it would see the Blues offloading some top stars to part-fund it, including potentially Werner or other another attacking star at the club.
Owner Roman Abramovich is expected to sanction more major spending in the upcoming window despite last year’s remarkable £250m rebuild.
It has been widely reported that Haaland has a release clause that becomes active in the summer of 2022 for around £68m.
Dortmund will also listen to offers for the striker this summer but it will cost a significantly higher fee to sign him in the next window.
Chelsea recognise it would probably take a £100m deal, or fee, to lure Haaland in the upcoming window.
Football Insider revealed earlier this month that it is possible Werner could quit Chelsea as early as this summer.
By contrast, Haaland is one of the most sought-after players in the world and regarded as a rising global superstar.
He has plundered 49 goals in 49 matches for Dortmund since joining from RB Salzburg in January of last year.
This season, Haaland has banged in 33 goals and supplied eight assists in 31 games, including a remarkable 10 strikes from just six Champions League matches.
In other news, Chelsea have lined up new contract talks with 28-year-old wanted by Premier League giants.
