Norwich City could be set for disappointment in their pursuit of Jacob Murphy as Newcastle United plan to trigger their option to extend the winger’s contract at St James’ Park, a source has exclusively revealed to Football League World.

Murphy has made 23 appearances in the Premier League this season under Steve Bruce, scoring two goals and registering two assists for the Magpies, whose top-flight status is now secure.

However, the 26-year-old is out of contract at St James’ Park heading into the summer and a source has revealed to Football League World that Norwich are keen to reunite with the player.

It has been revealed to us, though, that Newcastle plan on triggering an extension on Murphy’s terms in the North East, which could put Norwich’s hopes of a transfer out of reach before the summer transfer window has even opened.

Murphy, of course, played for Norwich earlier in his career, standing out at Carrow Road during the 2016/17 season.

That year, he scored nine goals and registered six assists for the Canaries, as well as notching a goal in the League Cup and making a name for himself with England’s under-21s.

Newcastle swooped to sign Murphy in a £12m transfer on the back of that season at Norwich, with the winger going on to make a total of 69 appearances for the Magpies.

He’s also had loan spells out in the EFL with West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield Wednesday, before returning to Newcastle ahead of 2020/21 and winning a place in Bruce’s squad.
