Ranger’s summer window is finally starting, it seems, to pick up a little bit of speed, with further breaking news that targets are being closed in on, potentially. While Rangers appear to have lost out to Queen’s Park Rangers for the services of Kwame Poku, nevertheless, the other two targets heavily being speculated at the moment, in Conor Coady and Max Aarons, both appear to be at advanced stages of negotiation. This is kind of a big deal, in the sense that these two are Premier League players.

Yes, one of them lost his way somewhat in the league, ended up out on loan at Valencia, and didn’t really sparkle there. His stock has fallen, but unfortunately, that’s the kind of market that Rangers are in these days. We can’t really have the marquee best Premier League players, unless we get one who’s out of contract. Enter one Conor Cody. That’s exactly his current status.

The 32-year-old defender, currently out of contract and a Bosman, may well be coming to Rangers after all, despite reports that he was going to choose his former club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are said to be offering a wage of around £70,000 a week. Obviously, those are numbers Rangers cannot compete with, but speculation at this point is that he has decided on a football level to come to Ibrox after all.

It is a big deal, that one. Wolves retain a big pull over Coady. That’s his former side, and a side who’s close to his heart. But the size of Rangers, European football, the club’s stadium, Ibrox, is to say the least a very attractive pull, especially at his age, where he’s made his money.

Now we do know that money will always talk, which is why the richest people still want to get even richer. But footballers only have a limited time in their careers to play for a big team, to play in Europe, to achieve certain football milestones. He’s made his money, and as they get older, the chance to play for a Rangers, or a Celtic, or a Manchester United, big, big clubs, big, big names, diminishes hugely.

So when an offer does arrive, they become very, very tempted indeed. It’s one to tick off the checkbox, the bucket list. So maybe Rangers will get him after all. There has been speculation over a two-year deal for the 32-year-old. As for Aarons, he’s said to have a medical booked in, and has agreed terms. It will only be a loan, but we’ll have another entry about that in due course. Nevertheless, two Premier League level defenders is definitely more on the right path for Rangers. Let’s hope they happen.
