Ryan Mason and Chris Powell are set to take charge of Tottenham following the sacking of Jose Mourinho today.

Spurs have given Mourinho his marching order after just 17 months in charge.

Club sources have told Football Insider that the Portugese was told the news of his dismissal this morning.

An official statement is imminent, in which Mourinho’s exit will be confirmed while the club are also set to reveal that Mason, 29, and Powell, 51, will take temporary charge of the team.

Mason has been head of player development at Tottenham since last summer after stepping up from his previous role of Under-19 coach.

He joined the Spurs academy’s coaching staff in April 2018 two months after being forced to retire from playing at the age of 26 due to an almost fatal head injury.

Powell joined Tottenham’s academy as head of coaching last summer.

He has previously managed Charlton, Huddersfield and Southend and has coached under Gareth Southgate with the England national team.

Spurs have let Mourinho go following a calamitous few months in which they have slipped down the Premier League at an alarming speed while also crashing out of the Europa League.

Mourinho has been under increasing pressure amid almost universal calls from supporters for him to be sacked.

Those reached a deafening new level following last Friday’s 2-2 draw at Everton that left Tottenham seventh in the Premier League table.

The timing is nonetheless a surprise as Spurs are still within five points of fourth position, which would theoretically secure a place in next season’s Champions League if the breakaway Super League proposal collapses.

The Londoners also play Man City in Sunday’s League Cup final that offers the chance to end their 13-year trophy drought.
