Manchester United are ready to walk away from the Kieran Trippier deal unless Atletico Madrid lower their asking price, Football Insider understands.
This site revealed last week that the La Liga champions had knocked back an opening bid of around £10m for the right-back from United.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider the English giants have planned to return to the negotiating table with an improved offer but have been put off by Atletico’s stance.
The Spaniards have let it be known in the last 24 hours they will not reduce their £35m asking price for the England full-back.
United believe that is totally unrealistic for a player who turns 31 in September and is out of contract in two years.
Trippier joined Atleti in the summer of 2019 and has made 68 appearances for the club.
He won his first league title last season as the Madrid club benefitted from Real Madrid and Barcelona’s poor form.
The defender also picked up six assists during a fine personal campaign.
Trippier’s performances last season saw him make England’s Euro 2020 squad.
He started the Three Lions’ opening game in the unfamiliar left back position, helping his side keep a clean sheet.
This will have done his reputation no harm with the Red Devils watching closely.
Trippier could also start tomorrow when England take on Scotland at Wembley.
Before moving to Spain, Trippier was a permanent fixture in Tottenham’s side for four seasons.
He racked up 114 appearances for the north London club.
