Celtic are hoping to beat Arsenal to the signing of Brighton goalkeeper Mathew Ryan by offering him a long-term contract and the number one shirt, Football Insider has learned.

The Gunners had been in pole position to land the Australia international after his loan spell in the second half of last season.

But the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as the new Celtic manager has provided a fresh twist that could see the Glasgow giants win the race.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the club have registered their interest in Ryan and are putting together a contract package.

The 29-year-old has already held talks with Arsenal after joining on a full-time basis and the club have discussed a price of between £3-5million.

Brighton are willing to let Ryan go with a year remaining on his contract.

Graham Potter gave the green light for the keeper to leave after he was axed from the starting XI last December.

Ryan was replaced in the team by Robert Sanchez, who had an extended run in the team in the second half of the season.

Arsenal eventually signed Ryan on an initial loan at the midway point of the campaign as they brought in experienced cover for first-choice keeper Bernd Leno.

He made three appearances for the London giants, all in the Premier League.

The keeper has spent four years at Brighton since signing from Valencia for a fee of around £5m.

He has made 124 appearances in the Premier League and has also racked up 58 international appearances.
