Luton Town star Alfie Doughty is attracting interest from overseas clubs, Football League World has learned
Luton Town star Alfie Doughty is attracting interest from several overseas clubs ahead of a potential departure from Kenilworth Road this summer following the Hatters' shock relegation to League One, Football League World can exclusively reveal.
The Hatters will be braced for a number of departures in the coming weeks and months after suffering consecutive relegations from the Premier League to English football's third-tier.
Although Luton are still in receipt of the Premier League's mandated three-year parachute payments package as they prepare to enter their second year, certain sales will nonetheless be necessitated in a bid to trim down the wage bill and move on those unwilling to spend at least one season in League One.
The Hatters finished in 22nd position and were relegated by virtue of goal difference on the final day behind Hull City, as they fell to a 5-3 defeat away at West Bromwich Albion.
Doughty is one player who could well be poised to leave Matt Bloomfield's side before the start of the new campaign in August, and it is FLW's understanding that the wing-back is not short of suitors following three impressive campaigns with Luton.
Sources close to FLW have revealed that Luton are fielding interest from several overseas clubs for Doughty. At the time of writing, it's unclear exactly who those clubs are, but this saga is certainly one to watch as we edge closer to the summer transfer window.
FLW understands that Luton are intent on retaining Doughty, who is classed as one of the club's prized assets, and they will not be looking to offload the former Charlton Athletic and Stoke City man on the cheap.
Luton have security over Doughty's future and should be able to negotiate any potential on their terms, with the player having penned an undisclosed contract extension only last September.
Doughty joined Luton from Stoke in the summer of 2022 and has established himself as a fan favourite at Kenilworth Road. The wide-man helped Luton to promotion through the play-offs in his debut campaign and made a significant impression as they were relegated from the Premier League last time out, recording two goals and eight assists from 38 appearances.
Injury proved disruptive last time out, with Doughty limited to just 26 league outings. He spent the back-end of the season on the sidelines as Luton suffered relegation but still enjoyed yet another productive campaign on an individual note by scoring once and setting up four goals.
Doughty is one of the players who has emerged from Luton's relegation season with his head held high, and it's no surprise to see interest developing in his services.
Although Luton are able, and willing, to operate with something of a hardball stance when it comes to negotiating approaches made for Doughty, the bottom line is that he evidently possesses far too much pedigree and proven quality to spend even a sole season below the Championship at the age of 25 and that ought to cast some doubt over his future.
Over the last three years, Doughty, who was even tipped to earn a potential England call-up while playing with the Hatters in the top-flight, has proven himself to be a top-end wing-back at Championship level.
His versatility, profile and quality will all make him an attractive proposition for clubs this summer, and the prospect of a move overseas could also be an appealing avenue to explore.
