Barcelona are focusing on ensuring the future of Frenkie de Jong as his contract nears its expiry in 2026.

Reports from Fichajes reveal that the club has laid out two possible options: either renew his contract or consider a sale during the upcoming summer transfer window.

The club’s management understands the importance of avoiding letting the Dutch midfielder enter the final year of his contract without clarity over his future. As a result, they have made de Jong’s situation a priority in the months ahead.

Saudi Arabian clubs are reportedly monitoring de Jong’s situation closely, with interest growing from teams eager to make an offer if he does not renew his deal with Barcelona.

While the winter transfer window is now closed, Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has shifted focus to resolving contract renewals, including de Jong’s.

The club has already secured several key players’ futures such as Ronald Araujo, Pedri and Gavi, but they still need to make decisions on a group of players with uncertain futures.

There are others like de Jong

Alongside de Jong, players such as Inaki Pena, Andreas Christensen, Pablo Torre, Eric Garcia, and Hector Fort are all in similar situations.

Barcelona aim to avoid entering the final year of their contracts with no decision made on their future, although this is not a concern for veterans Inigo Martinez and Robert Lewandowski, whose contracts are not as pressing.

De Jong’s situation is complicated by his significant salary. The club previously withdrew an offer after he did not respond to it, and now they are looking to negotiate an extension at a reduced salary.

His role has diminished somewhat due to a long injury that kept him off the pitch, giving Marc Casado the opportunity to step in. Should negotiations with de Jong stall, Barcelona is prepared to push for a sale in the summer.

However, de Jong has shown reluctance to leave the club, which could create tension as the season comes to a close.
