In the latest installment of our Polska Piłka column, we sum up the 2020/21 season and look forward to the international friendlies coming up.

Czarni Sosnowiec have won both the Polish Championship title and the Polish Cup, with SMS Łódź finishing runners-up in both competitions.

The Ekstraliga title was determined with one round to go. Czarni kept their five-point advantage over SMS in their penultimate match. That was also the moment when Medyk Konin, for the first time since 2003, lost their chances for a medal of any kind.

The highlight of the final round was the battle for silver between SMS and Górnik Łęczna. The reigning champions had three points to make up ahead of the final away game against their direct rivals in the silver battle. However, the 2-1 victory for SMS ensured the hosts’ second place in the club’s best season yet.

Łęczna settled for third but celebrated Nikola Karczewska finishing as the league’s top scorer.

The Polish Cup final was held on Saturday in Warsaw. Once again, the fight was between Czarni Sosnowiec, aiming for the double, and UKS SMS Łódź. The first half was under the control of the champions, who took a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Martyna Wiankowska scored from the spot after a penalty was awarded thanks to the first ever VAR challenge in Polish women’s club history. The defender made no mistake, adding to her tally as her side’s top scorer for the season.

Łódź managed to recover and score in the final minutes, but it was not enough to tie the game up. Czarni’s captain, goalkeeper Anna Szymańska was defending her seventh Polish Cup in her 14th final.

Transfer news

The Polish Cup final game was also a farewell to Weronika Zawistowska – playing in her home town. She leaves not only Sosnowiec, but also the Polish League to make a move to Germany. She has signed a three-year contract with Bayern Munich. Although, due to big differences between the level of women’s football in the two neighbour countries, she will go on loan in the upcoming season – most probably to the FC Köln – coming back to the Frauen Bundesliga after relegation in 2019/20.

The transfer window also sees abroad opportunities for Ewelina Kamczyk and Małgorzata Grec. Both are leaving bronze medallists Górnik Łęczna.

Before the holiday comes, there is a national team window at the beginning of June. The senior team of Poland, now officially led by first-ever female head coach Nina Patalon, will play in Spain against Finland and the Czech Republic.

Among the call-ups to the team was Tanja Pawollek – the captain of Eintracht Frankfurt with experience in junior German teams. She decided to change allegiance to Poland however, which is the fatherland of her parents.

The plans were stopped by the injury Pawollek got in the first half of the German Cup final – her place will be taken by Joanna Wróblewska, the leader of Śląsk Wrocław, eventually placed fifth in the Ekstraliga. There will also be a debutant in the team – Gabriela Grzybowska from UKS SMS Łódź.
