Manchester United started their 2024-25 Premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Fulham on Friday.

Newcomer Joshua Zirkzee grabbed all the headlines as he came off the bench to fire the winner in the 87th minute of the game.

It was a wonderful start for the Netherlands international after his move to Old Trafford in a deal worth more than €40 million.

But former England international Danny Murphy says Zirkzee is not going to be the answer to their goalscoring problems despite the forward being a wonderful talent.

Murphy says United need to sign a genuine No. 9 like Brentford’s Ivan Toney if they want to finish in the top-four this season.

He wrote in his column for the Mail On Sunday (August 18, Page 98): “Joshua Zirkzee has made a dream start at Manchester United and looks a wonderful talent. But sorry to disappoint United fans, he is not going to be the answer to their goalscoring problems.

“The Dutchman is strong and skilful, but not a proper centre forward. He likes to come to the ball and is more comfortable as a No 10 or wide. His scoring record at Bologna was a goal every four games — not great.

“Unless United go for a genuine No 9 like Ivan Toney in the last couple of weeks of the transfer window, I think you can discount their top four prospects. Rasmus Hojlund is not ready either to be that 20-goals-a-season man United need in the Premier League.”

Manchester United have added several top talents to the squad in the 2024 summer transfer window.

But injuries have once again become their biggest problem. Newcomer Leny Yoro picked up a knock during pre-season and he has been ruled out for three months.

Striker Rasmus Hojlund will also be unavailable until late September as the Dane is recovering from a thigh issue.

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw suffered a calf injury in training and the England international is not expected to be back until after the season’s first international break.

United finished a disappointing eighth in the Premier League last term as they mostly couldn’t start their best team due to injuries to their key players.

The 2024-25 campaign has just begun and Erik ten Hag’s side are already dealing with several injury problems. All this is very concerning for the fans who are hoping for a big comeback from their team this season.
