Local girl Mallory Pugh should have opened the scoring early on after Smith had found her with a lovely low cross.

The Stars and Stripes were in complete control in Commerce City, but struggled to find the target against a dogged Colombia side who are preparing to host the upcoming Copa América Femenina.

Lindsey Horan blew a chance to open the scoring for the Yanks from the spot just before half time when her tame penalty was repelled by goalkeeper Catalina Pérez.

Smith missed the rebound on that effort, but made no mistake shortly after the break when she latched onto Rose Lavelle’s through ball to force a shot home.

And the same pair connected again to double the lead on the hour mark, with Lavelle’s superb pass caressed home by Portland Thorns attacker Smith.

Pérez made her second penalty save of the night with just over 20 minutes remaining when she read Lavelle’s intentions perfectly to push the ball around the upright.

Taylor Kornieck, who had replaced Lavelle, marked her international debut by scoring in the closing stages as she met fellow substitute Megan Rapinoe’s free-kick with a glancing header.

The two sides will meet again at elevation on Tuesday when they face off in Sandy, Utah.
