The Stars and Stripes got off to a blistering start in Guadalupe, as Sophia Smith manoeuvered into the Jamaica penalty area before applying a sumptuous finish with the outside of her right boot.

Smith added her second just three minutes later when she took advantage of goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer’s indecisiveness to beat her to the ball.

It was a somewhat controversial goal as it was not entirely clear that the ball has fully crossed the line, but without goalline technology there was not enough evidence for VAR to chalk it off.

The USA could have been completely out of sight inside the opening half-hour had efforts from Ashley Hatch and Mallory Pugh not been ruled out for offside.

Vlatko Andonovski’s side lost some of their fluency after the break, but eventually notched a third goal when Rose Lavelle met Ashley Sanchez’s low cross to force the ball home.

As Jamaica tired late on, substitutes Kristie Mewis (penalty) and Trinity Rodman completed the scoring in a straightforward win.

Victory leaves the Yanks with maximum points from their opening two games in Group A, and they will be guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals (and a place at the 2023 World Cup) should Mexico fail to beat Haiti later on Thursday.
