Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer assures Italian football is ‘not in crisis’ after the humiliating EURO 2024 elimination in the Round of 16 and hints Dan Ndoye could join him at Inter.
The shot-stopper was practically undisturbed throughout the 2-0 victory in Berlin, as Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas scored the decisive goals at the Olympiastadion.
Speaking to the media afterwards in the mixed zone, Sommer tried to reassure the understandably downbeat Italian reporters.
“It is very positive for us, we played well against a great team and I am very happy. Our performance was excellent, so it was very difficult for Italy to get back into the game today because we were very aggressive and had quality on the ball,” said Sommer.
“If this is our performance in the next game, then we have a very good chance of doing well.”
Switzerland will face either England or Slovakia in the quarter-finals of the European Championship.
Considering their failure to qualify for the last two World Cup editions and this early elimination from the Euros, all of this interrupted by the EURO 2020 triumph, is Calcio in crisis?
“I don’t think so, no. Italy are a great team, but today we played really well. I know Serie A well and there is a lot of quality in this squad.”
Sommer was also asked about the rumours his Switzerland teammate Ndoye will soon be joining him at Inter, making a transfer from Bologna.
“You’d have to ask him,” smiled the goalkeeper.
