Overall, 2024 has not been a great year for FC Barcelona, as the Catalans were unable to add any major trophy to their cabinet this year. However, this has been an unforgettable year for one particular Blaugrana player, i.e., Lamine Yamal.
After having made a place for himself in the first team last year, the young winger has established himself as a key part of the team this year. Similarly, he also won his first big international trophy this year, as he emerged victorious in the UEFA EURO 2024 with Spain.
His performances with both Barcelona and the Spanish national team have also been recognized by the big footballing organizations, and he has already received the Kopa Trophy and the Golden Boy Award this year.
He added yet another individual title to his name recently, as he was recognized as the best-emerging player at the Globe Soccer Awards.
Mundo Deportivo talked to several attendees at this event and some of the most notable names in the world of football took this opportunity to praise the 17-year-old Barcelona winger.
For instance, Rio Ferdinand, the former Manchester United captain, was clear that he had not seen a player like Yamal before:
“I love this player. I’m going to take a picture with him and give him a hug. I’ve never seen a player like him doing what he’s doing at his age, and we won’t see it again. At this age, and with this impact on games, not even Messi had done it. I love this player.”
Similarly, the legendary AC Milan coach Fabio Capello also spoke very highly of Yamal as he compared him to Messi:
“Lamine is the future, an important future for Spanish football and for Barça, because he has so much quality. Hopefully, he continues as Messi did. I hope that’s the case… [For now] Messi is just a little bit taller.”
Another former player, who will be more easily recognized by Barcelona fans, who praised the winger at this event was Gerard Pique, who said:
“He is a young player with tremendous potential; it’s hard to set a ceiling for him. He still has a lot of growing to do, but what he’s showing is on a level with very few. We need to take care of him, and as the years go by, gradually demand more from him. For now, patience. Let him give us a lot and let’s see how he evolves.”
Thus, this would have been another great night for the Barcelona winger, whose talent continues to be recognized by the footballing world. Hopefully, he will continue to put in performances like has been in the last one and a half years and help Barcelona win some big titles to truly stamp his name in the history of the club and the sport.
