According to the Express, Manchester United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could ask Ed Woodward to bring in a new holding midfielder this summer.
United already have Fred and Nemanja Matic, who can already play in the position. The Brazilian was given the nod in yesterday’s match against Copenhagen.
After an underwhelming performance where he lacked impact, he was taken off for Matic. The Serbian improved United’s hold in the middle of the park.
However, at 32, he is not getting any younger. Fred also disappointed in the last-16 game against LASK that United won 2-1 at Old Trafford.
The club cannot afford to have half-hearted performances, especially given our ambition to usurp Liverpool and Manchester City. Bringing in a young dominant holding midfielder will be a step in that direction.
Doing so will also help free up Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, who are more effective in the attacking third. Striking a balance is necessary and Solskjaer will do well to bring in the right man.
Some of the names on the list could be N’Golo Kante and Declan Rice. Both players have been linked with a move away this summer.
While Kante is one of the best in the business, he has suffered from persistent injuries this season. Rice, on the other hand, is a budding youngster with a big future in the game. He will however not come cheap.
United are also keen to bring in a defender. Despite signing Harry Maguire and the improvement shown by Victor Lindelof, the Red Devils have shown they are susceptible at the back.
Despite the promise shown, United need a number of key additions to challenge for the top next season. Who they get and how they go about it remains to be seen.
