Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could welcome back Edwin van der Sar at Manchester United

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted at supporting Edwin van der Sar to replace the outgoing Ed Woodward at the club.

Woodward, the incumbent executive vice-chairman has held the post since taking over from David Gill in 2012. A stint not shorn of controversy, he is set to leave the club at the end of the season.

One of the names in the fray to replace him is former Red Devils star, Van der Sar. The Dutchman has now spent five years as chief executive at Ajax Amsterdam and has done an excellent job with limited resources.

The 50-year-old completed a masters in sports management and also spent time as marketing director at the Amsterdam club. He has shown an excellent ability to put together winning teams at Ajax, despite losing his stars to bigger clubs.

Solskjaer has now given his two cents regarding the Dutchman. The Norwegian has a partiality towards those connected to United and could voice his opinion in an official capacity if called upon to do so.

“It’s not my department but of course the criteria is that you always have Man United at the front of your mind.“Your job is to do as well as you can for Man United – and that is what I’m trying to do. And if I’m asked I’ll give an opinion.”

Not impossible!

Van der Sar, for his part, is also aware of his name being circulated as a potential replacement for Woodward. The Dutchman has interestingly dropped United’s name as a club where he could in fact work.

“I could only do this for Ajax or United. I would not work for any other clubs.”

The 50-year-old is certainly a romantic choice and will have the club’s best interests at heart. More so, he has also proven his credentials by succeeding at Ajax. A popular figure among the fans, it is safe to say he would be welcomed by the supporters.

Solskjaer has often spoken about the need of having people associated with the club hold key positions. Mike Phelan returned as his assistant manager while Michael Carrick is also amongst the coaching staff.

Former star Darren Fletcher too recently took over as technical director. Whether Van der Sar too will join them soon remains to be seen.
