Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United are full of confidence after moving top of the Premier League but admits beating Liverpool this weekend would represent an ‘upset’.

United travel to face the Premier League champions on Sunday sitting top of the division following a fine run of form, three points clear of their Merseyside rivals after extending their unbeaten run to 11 games after winning at Burnley in midweek.

The club’s strong showings have raised optimism over a potential title challenge this season, though the Red Devils will face the biggest test of their credentials yet when they travel to Anfield this weekend.

Liverpool have failed to win in their past three league fixtures to drop to second, but are unbeaten in 67 games on home soil in the Premier League, a run that stretches back more than three calendar years.

Solskjaer says United will head into the top-of-the-table clash in confident mood but admits extending their advantage and securing all three points ‘would be an upset’ for his emerging side.

“Being where we are in the league just gives us more confidence and it’s a sign of where we are at,” said Solskjaer at his pre-match press conference.

“The game against the champions, who have an amazing record at Anfield, is a great test for us.

“Can we go there and cause an upset? We are the challengers and they have earned the right to be champions. We want something they have.

“If you look at the results in the last few seasons, it [victory] would be an upset.”
