Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United are making ‘strides forward’ despite the club’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.

Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah scored the goals that condemned Manchester United to a seventh league defeat of the season at Anfield at the weekend, Solskjaer’s fifth-placed side failing to capitalise on Chelsea‘s defeat to Newcastle to remain five points behind Frank Lampard’s side in the race to secure Champions League qualification.

Despite the club’s latest setback, Solskjaer insists his side are continuing to make progress and says their performance in defeat on Merseyside was further evidence of the ‘strides forward’ being made by his developing side.

“We lost to Liverpool, a team that you all say are fantastic and we’ve been in the game until the last kick of the ball. For me, that’s strides forward.

“Of course we’re disappointed about losing the game. We don’t want to be behind them in the league. But there are signs there that we’re on the right track, definitely.”

United will look to continue their push towards a top-four finish when they return to action tomorrow night, the Red Devils welcoming Sean Dyche’s Burnley to Old Trafford during a full round of midweek Premier League fixtures.

Marcus Rashford will be amongst the club’s absentees having been ruled out for two to three months with a back injury, though Eric Bailly could return having been named in the matchday squad for the first time this season at Liverpool.
