Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted that he’s not shocked by Bruno Fernandes’ impact at Manchester United, after the Portugal International continued his fine form with a brace in the Uefa Champions League on Tuesday night.

The 26-year-old was the driving force as United exacted revenge on Turkish champions Istanbul Basaksehir, the midfielder netting a fierce effort into the roof of the net early on, before adding a second soon after with a much easier tap-in after ‘keeper Fehmi Gunok had flapped at a cross.

That devastating double not only catapulted United to a much needed 4-1 win after their embarrassing display in Turkey, but also took his exceptional tally to 34 goal involvements in just 35 appearances for the club in all competitions. The former Sporting Club man has now netted 21 goals and 13 assists since making his debut in February.

Those staggering statistics don’t exactly come as much of a surprise considering the obvious impact he’s had at the club, with the playmaker integral as the Red Devils surged to a third-placed finish last term.

That form has continued this season, with Fernandes having netted six times and produced three assists in the Premier League thus far, including his latest re-taken penalty in the 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

While clearly a talented player while in Portugal, there are few who can have expected such an entrance into English football, yet when asked about whether he was surprised by Fernandes’ impact, Solskjaer revealed that his quality is there for all to see.

“Not really, no,” Solskjaer replied at his post-match press conference. “Of course we see him every day in training.

“We knew what we were going to get when we brought Bruno into the team. He’s a player who likes to take risks, wants team to win and do well and it shows.

“Today he showed he can do more than just take penalties.”
