Solskjaer full of praise for Edinson Cavani and David de Gea after Manchester United qualify for Europa League final

Speaking to the media (h/t Sky Sports), Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed Edinson Cavani and David de Gea as his side made it through to the finals of the UEFA Europa League beating AS Roma on aggregate.

Coming into the game, Manchester United had a healthy 6-2 advantage from the first leg. And Cavani managed to add to that in the first half with a thumping finish to put us on course for the finals.

Roma, though, fought hard after the break and scored twice in quick succession through Edin Dzeko and Bryan Cristante to cause some nerves.

They could have very well been back in the game if not for some sensational goalkeeping from David de Gea, who made stunning saves to deny Dzeko, Pedro as well as former teammate Henrikh Mkhitaryan before Cavani scored his second of the night to kill the tie.

Roma, though, managed to score another goal late on but Manchester United held on to end the semi-final hoodoo under Solskjaer and make it to the main event in Gdansk later this month.

Speaking after the game, Solskjaer hailed Cavani and De Gea’s contributions to the result, calling them the best in their positions.

“We kept losing the ball in difficult positions but luckily we have got one of the best goalkeepers in the world and luckily we have a No. 9 who wants to score goals. Edi and David, two top performances by them.”

While we may have lost the battle on the night in Rome, we did win the war. A place in the finals, where will we face Villarreal, is a just reward for what has been a toiling campaign for the players.

But, we cannot afford to play the way we did on Thursday in the showpiece event in Gdansk in a few weeks’ time.
