According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskajer is closing in on a decision regarding his goalkeeping conundrum ahead of the 2021/22 season.

The 24-year-old had to recently withdraw from the England squad due to a hip injury. He is however set to be fit for pre-season. Henderson can certainly make Solskjaer’s job easier by impressing in these games.

Henderson started last season behind David de Gea in the pecking order. He did get to play in 26 games, compared to the latter’s 36. He also enjoyed a brief run as the No.1 during March and April.

Henderson was however consigned to the bench for United’s Europa League final against Villarreal. It was a night to forget for De Gea who missed the decisive penalty in the shootout. Perhaps as a test, Solskjaer interestingly alternated between his goalkeepers for the final six games of the season.

What this means for either player’s future at the club remains to be seen. According to the report, they are both ready to leave the club if they are not handed the starting goalkeeper’s spot.

De Gea particularly appears to be at a crossroads moment in his career. Not only is his standing at club level a matter of concern, but he was also benched for Spain’s Euro 2020 opener against Sweden.

The summer is an important one for Henderson, who is keen to wrest the No.1 position for himself next season. An impressive pre-season coupled with a strong showing against Leeds will certainly aid his cause.
