Solskjaer explains what Man Utd players told Lingard after mistake vs Young Boys | OneFootball

The first real disappointment of the season came earlier this week when Manchester United surprisingly slipped to defeat in their Champions League curtain-raiser against Young Boys.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were heavy favourites going into the game but despite taking the lead after just 13 minutes through Cristiano Ronaldo, a red card for Aaron Wan-Bissaka changed the complexion of the game.

Young Boys equalised after roughly an hour and scored the winner in the last minute of added time after a poor backpass from Jesse Lingard.

Lingard had scored his first goal for the club in over a year just days before and the unfortunate mishap against the Swiss outfit will have come as a blow to the 28-year-old’s confidence.

Solskjaer has now revealed how the rest of the Manchester United squad reacted to the error, insisting that United’s team spirit didn’t allow Lingard to be apologetic.

“We’re a team,” he told Sky Sports, as seen above. “We are a team, that’s Man United for you. We win together, we lose together, we make mistakes. You don’t make mistakes if you don’t try. We want players to play with a bit of confidence.

“Jesse wanted to play a good pass and the outcome wasn’t right – that happens. Jesse said sorry but all the players said ‘No, no, no – forget about asking for forgiveness’.

“When you score a great goal, everyone celebrates together with him. That’s part of being in a football team. Players know their intentions. We’ve seen Jesse since he’s come back from pre-season and he’s given everything to play for Man United, his team and his teammates.”

If the last nine months is anything to go by, the latest setback will remain just that and Lingard will be able to move on quickly as he sets his eyes on a successful season for Manchester United. Certainly, the backing from his teammates, as Solskjaer has revealed, will help.
