Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not holding his breath on Manchester United making more marquee signings

According to ESPN (h/t Express), Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is aware that the club may not sanction further big-money deals this summer.

The Red Devils have been proactive this summer and have already brought in Tom Heaton and Jadon Sancho. French superstar Raphael Varane looks to be the next one in through the door after an agreement was struck with Real Madrid.

Both players will be expected to go straight into the starting XI as United look to close the gap on Manchester City at the top. It is fair to say that the signings help strengthen two weak areas of our first XI – the right-wing and at centre back.

Despite the backing he has received, Solskjaer is keen to bring in two more players this summer. The Norwegian is eyeing a right-back and a central midfielder to further strengthen his side. Whether he will get his wish is debatable.

The United boss appears to have grudgingly accepted that funds may not be made available to fulfil his desire. Both Varane and Sancho have set United back £115m, a significant amount given the financial aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of course, the club can always make funds available by selling players. According to the report, eight stars could be made available in order to finance further incomings. The likes of Andreas Pereira, Brandon Williams and Diogo Dalot have never looked like breaking into the first XI and could be allowed to move on.

The likes of Anthony Martial, Daniel James and Alex Telles could, however, fetch higher prices. The same can be said of Jesse Lingard who was sensational in the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United. The forgotten man, Phil Jones is also amongst those who could be sold this summer. Paul Pogba is another player who could leave the club this summer. The French ace has just a year to go on his current deal and could be open to a new challenge.

Despite potentially not having it all his way, Solskjaer has been handed two world-class tools with which he can look to take us back to the summit next season. The Norwegian has come close numerous times but is yet to win his first major honour as the Red Devils boss. He will have no excuses if he goes yet another campaign without silverware.
