Sofiane Boufal and Azzedine Ounahi set to leave Angers following World Cup performances

Having starred in Morocco’s underdog run to a fourth-place finish at the World Cup, Angers’ Sofiane Boufal and Azzedine Ounahi have inevitably attracted interest from around Europe, with their days at Ligue 1’s bottom-placed team ostensibly now numbered.

According to L’Équipe,  both of the Atlas Lions want to leave. Boufal has removed any mention of Le SCO from his social media, and the former Southampton man already had offers from the Middle East to leave his formative club, where he returned in 2020.

His teammate had the chance to leave this summer, but Lille’s €7m bid was turned down. The club would like to sell Ounahi and keep him on loan until the end of the season, with Leicester having already enquired. The Foxes are prepared to offer up to €45m.

A transfer also appears inevitable given the budget restrictions Angers are faced with this season – two lucrative transfers would bring some much-needed relief to their finances, in particular consdering the profit they will be making on Ounahi, who was recruited from third-tier Avranches less than two years ago.

Having taken part in the celebrations in Rabat, the two are now on vacation until the start of January. Despite interim manager Abdel Bouhazama’s efforts to stay in touch with them during the World Cup, it may well be the case that they’ve already played their last game for Angers.
