Anthony Gordon found himself in the thick of the action on Saturday.
The Newcastle United star winning two penalties and then playing a key role in the move that led to Harvey Barnes’ stunning finish.
The only negative where Anthony Gordon was concerned, is that he was sent off for kicking the ball away, picking up a second yellow card.
The former Everton player had gone into the West Ham match on 8 yellow cards, one less than Bruno on 9.
Anthony Gordon will now serve a one match suspension for picking up the two yellow cards, BUT when it comes to building towards a possible two match Premier League ban if accumulating 10 yellow cards in the first 32 PL matches of the season, is Anthony Gordon now on 8, 9, or 10 yellow cards???
This is now the 2023/24 Premier League leaderboard for Newcastle United players and yellow cards, following that West Ham match:
9 Bruno Guimaraes
8 Gordon
5 Joelinton, Longstaff, Trippier
4 Lascelles, Schar
3 Burn
2 Tonali, Wilson, Botman
1 Barnes, Targett, Ritchie, Livramento, Almiron, Hall, Miley, Dubravka, White, Isak, Murphy
So… Anthony Gordon has now actually been shown 10 yellow cards in Premier League matches this season… BUT due to the two yellows on Saturday equalling an instant one match PL suspension, the two latest cards DO NOT get added to the running total, as they turned into a red!
As for Bruno Guimaraes another suspension looked guaranteed, when he moved to nine PL yellow cards against Man City on 13 January 2024, in the 3-2 home defeat. However, remarkably since then, not a single yellow card in these last 11 NUFC matches which have included eight PL games. Ironically, Bruno did get a yellow in the game immediately before this West Ham match BUT that was for Brazil in their 3-3 draw with Spain.
So, with 29 matches gone, Bruno has to avoid a yellow against Everton at home, Fulham away and Spurs at home, to get to the end of 32 NUFC Premier League matches gone and avoid a two game suspension.
Whilst for Anthony Gordon he is suspended against Everton (due to the West Ham red card) on Tuesday night and only yellows against Fulham and Spurs would get him to ten yellows and a two game ban.
At one time it looked like Bruno and potentially other Newcastle United players could have been in danger of reaching 15 yellows in this PL season, which would then bring a further three game ban. However, things have relatively calmed down after 36 yellow cards in the opening 13 NUFC Premier League matches. With 23 (not including Gordon’s two on Saturday) in the next 16 PL games.
