As Liverpool marked their long-awaited Premier League title coronation with a draw against Crystal Palace, it was not silverware or Salah’s 29th goal that dominated the Anfield narrative. It was Trent Alexander-Arnold — and his goodbye.
After 20 years with the club, Alexander-Arnold is set to leave Liverpool as a free agent this summer. Despite recent challenges in breaking into Arne Slot’s starting eleven, he was given a heartfelt moment in the spotlight when introduced at half-time on Sunday. Slot confirmed it was always the plan to give the full-back some minutes, stating, “I think he deserved to be on the pitch for all he’s done for me and his teammates. He deserved to be on the pitch one more time at Anfield, and the reaction of the fans was, as expected, fantastic.”
That reaction was particularly notable given the initial backlash from some fans when news first broke that Trent would depart. However, on the day itself, Anfield rose as one to show appreciation for a player who has worn red since childhood.
Slot, now fully at the helm following Jürgen Klopp’s departure, cut a thoughtful figure after full time. He said, “He is leaving such a great club, and he knows, he feels that. He leaves the club after 20 years. He knows everyone here, teammates, staff members.”
Alexander-Arnold shared emotional scenes with his family and teammates, having delivered a composed showing in what could be his final appearance for Liverpool. Slot empathised with the emotion on display: “It is normal if you leave a club after a few years, you are probably going to miss it, let alone after 10 years, let alone if you leave Liverpool.”
Replacing a player of Trent’s technical brilliance and attacking prowess is no small task. Slot must now reshape a back line that has for years depended on Alexander-Arnold’s vision and precision. “The quality he showed today again is why it is such a pity he is going to leave,” Slot admitted.

While not confirming any names, Slot hinted that Liverpool are already in motion, pursuing summer reinforcements. Reports suggest the club are close to deals for Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz — players with attacking credentials that fit the mould of what Liverpool may lose in Trent.
As one chapter closes with tears and trophies, Slot’s era truly begins with the test of transition — and with it, the weighty responsibility of evolving Liverpool’s identity.
