Arne Slot insists that he was not ‘delighted’ with Liverpool’s performance, despite recording a 2-0 win over Bologna at Anfield in the Champions League on Wednesday night, explaining that Vincenzo Italiano’s side made the game difficult in a similar way to Atalanta last season.

“It wasn’t an easy one in my opinion. Bologna made it difficult, similar to Atalanta last season, they played a man-mark all over the pitch,” Slot said during his post-match chat with TNT sports.

Unlike Bologna, Atalanta inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Liverpool when they stepped out at Anfield in the Europa League quarter-final last season. Both Italian teams tried to mark Liverpool man-for-man all over the pitch.

“You have to wait for the right moment, because if you play through it, then it’s completely open and I think it was open many times, but the last pass could have been better,” Slot continued.

Bologna’s encouraging performance, despite their loss, meant that Slot left not entirely satisfied with his team’s showing, but is pleased overall with the result.

“I don’t know if there were many things that I was delighted with apart from the two goals. We’ve scored two very good goals, especially the second one.

“It’s always difficult to play against a team that takes that much risk and is constantly on top of you. Second half was better in pressing, I felt that the first half was an overall good result, but I wouldn’t use the word ‘delighted’ myself.”

“It’s nearly impossible to do something so special at this club.” 🤣 Arne Slot reacts to a record-breaking start as Liverpool boss and to his first Champions League night at Anfield 🏟 pic.twitter.com/coWnccvbll
