‘Sloppy, ‘unusual’, and didn’t do the ‘basics’ – Thomas Tuchel’s honest assessment vs Watford

Chelsea somehow managed to take all three points from Watford in the Premier League last night after their worst first half performance under Thomas Tuchel so far.

It was a very strange 45 from The Blues, they looked like a Championship side rather than a team sat at the top of the Premier league, and whilst they improved in the second half, Watford deserved at the VERY least a point from this game.

They were better and quicker than Chelsea all over the pitch and it was a hard watch for Tuchel and Chelsea fans. Luckily we took our chances and managed to win the game, but Tuchel says this is one they are quickly chalking off and now looking ahead to Saturday.

He admits we were very lucky to win this game, and has described our play as ‘unusual’ and ‘sloppy’, but I’d say that’s being polite.

“Very sloppy and it was a very unusual performance for us,” Tuchel said after the game as reported by WAGNH.

“[We] were not ready. Not only maybe. I am involved in that. I have to get the team ready. I didn’t prepare them for what was coming because it was the first time we completely underperformed as a team. We didn’t win first balls, second balls, we did not cope well with the pressure. It is one thing to win or lose challenges but we did not even find them.

[We] struggled in the build up and skilful solutions. We needed to do the basics better, hang in there and change the mentality and to accept it. [We] can admit today that we were lucky to win this game. It was a very unusual performance for us, I will not focus long on this match because we play on Saturday again. [We] are in this together and we got a lucky win today.”
