Sheffield United boss Slavisa Jokanovic has revealed that he is considering using Sander Berge in a more advanced role after his goal against Preston in the week.

The Norwegian international was a big-money signing for the Blades when they were a Premier League side, but he hasn’t always shown consistency since making the move from his favoured central midfield position.

With Oliver Norwood and John Fleck starring in midfield in the brilliant 6-2 win over Peterborough United in Jokanovic’s 4-2-3-1 formation, he stuck with the duo for North End’s visit.

As a result, the returning Berge came on in an advanced role, and he responded with a well-taken goal.

And, speaking to Yorkshire Live, Jokanovic admitted using Berge higher up the pitch is a real possibility moving forward.

I am talking with him and asking him how he feels about playing in this position. His distribution was good from the left side, from right side and in the end he scored. He’s a player who plays in the middle, but he produced a comfortable game with his quality.

I am trying to find different solutions with this style that we play now. I need to adapt some players.”

The verdict

The last line from Jokanovic is telling, as it shows he still doesn’t have the right players to suit his system, so he’s looking to make a few tweaks to ensure things can click.

Obviously, Saturday was a great day for the team as they were brilliant, and whilst Preston snatching a late draw was frustrating, it was still a decent performance.

So, there are some positive signs and Jokanovic will still have to experiment, with Berge someone who is capable of making a big impact, no matter where he plays on the pitch.
