After their devastating 4-0 home defeat to relegation rivals Bruk-Bet Termalica Nieciecza on Saturday, two-time Polish champions Śląsk Wrocław decided to take drastic action against their underperforming players. In a statement issued on Sunday, the club stated that the April salaries for the squad would be frozen!
In the statement, the club’s Sporting Director, Dariusz Sztylka, has taken the blame for the club’s precarious position:
“Śląsk Wrocław is not and has never been just a place of work for me – it is my whole life”, Sztylka wrote. “This club is our pride and each of us, whether in the office, on the pitch or in the stands, is obliged to give it all our heart. Therefore, I will not accept a failure suffered in such a compromising way as on Saturday. It cannot happen again.
“Today I would not be able to look in the mirror if, despite the difficulties, I had not stood behind the people I trusted. I have always tried to follow the good of WKS and as sports director, I take full responsibility for the construction of this team and its attitude. I believe that the main focus of criticism should be on me, even if it leads to my resignation. I am ready to face such consequences. The players and their staff have to clean their heads and focus only on preparations for the match with Jagiellonia.
“Anyone who knows my story also knows that I experienced almost everything with Silesia. These colors have always symbolized the fight to the very end, so I want to appeal to the fans for support, which is especially needed now, at a key moment of the season ”.
Śląsk have spent much of the season hovering around the relegation zone, and little has changed even following the dismissal of Jacek Magiera after a run of eight games without victory. Only six points from their six games since, leaves the Wrocławianin side three points above the drop zone, with four games left – and with Wisła Kraków able to reduce that gap further, against Wisła Płock on Monday evening.
