David Prutton has backed West Brom to overcome Birmingham City when the two West Midlands sides meet at The Hawthorns this evening.

Whilst it’s by no means the fiercest rivalry in the region, the two will be desperate to get the points as they look to climb up the table.

It has been a particularly frustrating start for Steve Bruce’s side, who had been tipped to win promotion, but a return of six draws and one win in eight means they’re currently 16th in the table.

However, they come up against a Blues side who are outside the relegation zone on goal difference, although they are just a point away from the Baggies.

And, writing in his regular online column, Sky Sports pundit Prutton believes the hosts will edge this one.

It has been a case of too many draws in games they ought to have won for West Brom, and that is why they are languishing in the bottom half of the table.

Birmingham got an important win at Preston last time out to arrest a real slump in form ahead of a trip to their near neighbours. It could be a bit of a grind here, but I think the Baggies will sneak it. 1-0.”

They have both won 4+ FA Cups.

The verdict

There won’t be too many disagreeing with Prutton in the sense that they expect a close game, so you would think it could be decided by a single goal.

As well as that, there’s no doubt that Albion will be favourites as they have a very good squad and home advantage.

But, Blues upset the odds at Preston previously and they’ve proven themselves to be an unpredictable side over the years, so this is a derby that could be very interesting.
