According to Sky Sports, Nottingham Forest have opened discussions with RB Leipzig regarding the possibility of signing right-back Lutsharel Geertruida. With just five days left before the transfer window closes, Forest are working on several full-back targets and Geertruida has emerged as a serious candidate.
The Dutch international only joined RB Leipzig last summer from Feyenoord, but reports suggest he is far from content in Germany. “Geertruida himself is dissatisfied and open to a departure, despite joining the club only last summer from Feyenoord,” Sky Sports have revealed.
The situation has attracted plenty of interest across Europe. Serie A side Atalanta are among the clubs exploring a potential deal. Talks around a loan with an option to buy are believed to be ongoing, a structure that would appeal to both Forest and the player.
With Nuno Espírito Santo keen to add depth and quality across his backline, Forest have identified Geertruida as one of four possible full-back signings. The club’s recruitment strategy is clearly focused on strengthening defensive areas ahead of a crucial Premier League campaign.
Forest fans have witnessed inconsistent performances at right-back, so news of a possible addition is likely to spark excitement. Sky Sports note that “he is one of four full-back options the club are working on with five days of the window remaining,” highlighting the urgency behind the negotiations.
Geertruida, 23, is known for his versatility, having operated across defence during his time at Feyenoord. His technical quality and athletic profile would suit the demands of the Premier League. At Leipzig, opportunities have been limited, which has fuelled his dissatisfaction.
For Forest, a loan deal with an option to buy would carry minimal risk, while providing the chance to evaluate whether he can adapt quickly to English football. Competition from Atalanta cannot be ignored, yet Forest’s proactive approach underlines their intent.
With time running short before deadline day, Forest face a race to finalise additions. The interest from Atalanta ensures there will be pressure on the Midlands club to act decisively. Still, if a deal can be agreed, Geertruida could prove to be a significant upgrade in a key position.
From a Nottingham Forest supporter’s perspective, the link to Lutsharel Geertruida feels like an ambitious and positive move. The right-back slot has been a problem area for some time, and bringing in a player who has already shone in European football would represent a step forward.
Fans will particularly like the idea of a loan with an option to buy. This would protect the club financially, while still giving Forest the chance to secure a top talent if he proves his worth. Geertruida’s dissatisfaction at Leipzig might actually work in our favour, as players looking for a fresh start often settle quickly when given the right platform.
The fact that Atalanta are also interested shows the calibre of the player. It will not be an easy deal to get over the line, but the intention from the club to compete in this market sends a strong signal.
At 23, Geertruida fits the mould of someone who can grow with the team. If Forest can make this happen, it could be one of the smartest moves of the window. Supporters will be watching closely, and the hope is that the board delivers before deadline day.
