Tottenham Hotspur were never really interested in Arsenal target Gabriel Jesus

According to Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge, Manchester City star Gabriel Jesus was never a target for Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs were supposedly interested in bringing the Brazilian striker to the Lilywhites, but it seems the 25-year-old was always a top target for Arsenal, and the same cannot be said of Tottenham.

The speculation about the interest from Tottenham was seemingly fictional. Jesus may have fallen down the pecking order at The Etihad but remains a potent player capable of doing a job.

Jesus wouldn’t have found it easy at Spurs

For a player who’s leaving the Champions to apparently get more game time, a move to Spurs wouldn’t have made sense since Harry Kane is the focal point of Antonio Conte’s attack. The English striker is our vice-captain and played the majority of the minutes upfront last season.

While Jesus is versatile and has played many games on the right wing, the 25-year-old would still have to get through the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, who’s already made a place for himself in the team since arriving in January.

With this in mind, for a player supposedly looking for a more central role in a team, making a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium wouldn’t be the best decision for the Brazilian to realise his ambitions.

With the striker position vacant at the Emirates, the move makes perfect sense on the players part. However, it does strengthen our direct rivals and that is not a good thing.

The signing wouldn’t have made sense for Spurs either. With Kane, Son Heung-min, Kulusevski and Ivan Perisic, and Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura still at the club for now, Conte has many options to choose from.

Spending a lot of money on a player who would’ve found it hard to get minutes off the bench if he had made a move to the club would’ve taken away some of the spending power needed to be invested elsewhere.

Centre-back is a position that Tottenham need to strengthen and keeping money in the bank for that position could make the difference in bringing a top defender to the club this summer.
