Danny Sturridge is on Sky Sports to cover today’s Chelsea Liverpool game, and pre-match they’ve got the former striker – who played for both teams at different points – to discuss what he thinks of the job manager Enzo Maresca has done since taking over in the summer.

As you’d expect, he was very positive about the Italian coach’s impact so far. He picked out a number of things, in particular Maresca’s work with individuals who he seems to be improving, from Moises Caicedo to Nicolas Jackson.

“I think he really has done amazing. To implement his style in such a short space of time… in midfield they look more sure, going forward they’re so exciting. All across the pitch they have improved, and now they’ve got a lot of players back from injury,” the pundit commented.

You can see Sturridge making his point in the clip embedded here:

Sturridge holds back on predictions for this season

Despite all this praise, Sturridge held back from saying that this team were going to be title contenders just yet.

“They’re heading in the right direction. To say they’re going to challenge now is a stretch, but they’re heading in the right direction and next season I think they’ll be right in the thick of things,” he concluded.

That’s a pretty safe prediction. This side already look good, and the crazy disruptions of the last few years fading into the background should do a huge amount to help them. Go up another level. It’s true that it’s hard to see us competing for the league this year – but the cup competitions are wide open for us to make a run of it.

We might yet end up surprising even positive pundits like Danny come May.
