Sky journalist outlines why Romagnoli’s errors must be ‘contextualised’ and what may have generated ‘insecurity’ | OneFootball

Italian journalist Matteo Marani has jumped to the defence of Alessio Romagnoli by claiming his mistakes must be ‘contextualised’ given how 2021 has been for him.

Romagnoli has been heavily criticised for his performance during Sunday afternoon’s 3-1 defeat at home against Sassuolo. Although he gave the Rossoneri the lead with an early header, he was put on his back by Domenico Berardi as the away side opened up a two-goal lead before seeing a straight red card for hauling Defrel down as the last man.

It was certainly not the easiest afternoon for the 26-year-old who is also operating under the cloud of not knowing what his future holds given his contract expires at the end of the season.

Marani spoke about Romagnoli’s difficulties in the recent period during a segment on Sky Italia, beginning by remarking how the purchase of Fikayo Tomori – while an astute signing – is perhaps what started the slide in form.

“Tomori? The growth of Milan was linked to his purchase, and rightly Maldini and Massara, who in my opinion are two shrewd managers, have done everything to be able to keep him and confirm him,” he said (via MilanNews).

“Romagnoli’s role is not easy, because he can be questioned despite his role as captain, and with the additional issue of the contract, there are pressures on this guy. It is too easy to dismiss him with ‘He made mistakes and mistakes too much’.

“I think that everything needs to be contextualised and understand what these six months in which he has been overtaken by a player specially chosen for his role have meant for him. This may have generated some more insecurity.”
