Matteo Darmian had Inter’s only real opening of a subdued first half with the ball landing at his feet at the far post but his volley was well saved by Guglielmo Vicario.

The opening period looked to be heading out with a whimper until an incident five minutes before the break changed the whole complexion of the clash as the hosts were reduced to ten men.

Milan Škriniar, who is reportedly set to reject Inter’s offer of a new contract and sign for PSG, received his marching orders for a high boot on Empoli forward Francesco Caputo.

Empoli took advantage of the space left by Inter’s depleted numbers and struck the deadly blow midway through the second half when they burst away on the counter-attack before Tommaso Baldanzi burst the back of the net with powerful low drive form the edge of the box.

Romelu Lukaku came from the bench as Inter searched for an equaliser and Stefan De Vrij was cursing his luck when he saw his header come back off the bar in the dying minutes.

The result leaves Inter in third while Empoli jump above Juventus and into the top half.
