Manchester City’s Women’s Director of Football Therese Sjogran expects the Club to bring in some fresh faces during the upcoming January transfer window.
The Blues have enjoyed a strong start to the campaign, with 14 wins from 16 matches in all competitions this season, but the demanding schedule has taken its toll.
Indeed, boss Gareth Taylor is currently missing several key players ahead of our final two matches of 2024, including the likes of Alex Greenwood, Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, Lauren Hemp and Vivianne Miedema among others.
Sjogran believes a full-strength City squad are more than capable of competing for top honours, but that fresh faces in January will certainly aid that pursuit.
She said: “The window is opening in January, so I need to be a little bit quick, but Charlotte [O’Neill] has done a good job so far. But it’s got to be to make the right decisions at the right time.”
“I think there are going to be some changes. We have a lot of injuries at the moment and of course it’s good for the young players to get the experience.
“For going to the next start of the season with every competition, the league, the cup and the Champions League you need more depth, I think.
“But if you get injuries on the wrong players, it’s always difficult. There are going to be some changes.
“With everybody fit, I think it’s a great team. Top class players in so many positions. For me, to come in at a point like this, okay we can make some changes, but the team is really, really good.
“I can’t wait to get to know them off the pitch also.”
A former Sweden international, Sjogran joins City with an incredible CV to her name.
Her most recent role was as Sporting Director of Rosengard, which she held from 2015 until the conclusion of the most recent Damallsvenskan campaign.
Rosengard finished as champions in her final season, losing just once en route to their fourth title during Sjogran’s tenure.
Our new Director of Football admits it was a difficult decision to leave her former employers, but the opportunity to join City was one she simply couldn’t turn down.
“I had been there [Rosengard] a lot of years, but at the same time, I knew I was done there and I wanted to take the next step. Of course, there are a lot of feelings and emotions to leave,” she added.
“But at the same time, being here is something I wanted to [do]. I’m really happy.
“Of course it’s a big thing, it’s really big. It’s one of the best [clubs] in the world and to be able to come here and build something, have an impact on a club like this is very big for me.”
